River Eden February 2018
Up to mid-month not a lot to report due to high water levels and unsettled conditions. It is usually at this point of the season where we see salmon entering the lower river, when levels and weather ease off and anglers start to fish I am sure there will be some positive result on the lower Eden beats.
Result, 13th, a twenty pound fish for Raymond Chesworth off Warwick Hall! 20th, river dropping, 2.5′ above summer height on lower river. The last week of February an eight pound fish for J Wignal from Warwick Hall beat and just upstream of that two more fish reported of ten and twelve pounds.
27th February, the river is at one foot above summer level and clear. There are a few salmon starting to move through now, anglers that have been out have had some success upstream of Carlisle, so they must be going through.
Regarding our beats, there has been quite some change to the lower Beaumont area with bank erosion just below the car park. This area fishes best at .9m and below, it gets better the more it drops, check the Sheepmount gauge – https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/station/5127
It is possible at low water to wade out onto the gravel area below the car park when the water levels are low, but please do be aware of the tide times if you do as you will need to get off before the tide hits – Redkirk – https://www.tidetimes.org.uk/redkirk-tide-times
Just upstream of that, the river has the flow on our bank predominately now, it looks interesting and needs exploring. The Willow Bed has remained unchanged and a great place for a fish, there are two separate pools, above the log in the fast water which is fished from the bank, (the big log is still hanging in there and a great place to take a fish on the far edge of it) and indeed all down the pool below that wading through.
The upper beat remains unchanged and in good order!
Mid-March when temperatures rise will see the beats become very active with the first of the rises of Large Dark Olives and certainly more salmon coming in.
Please do let me know how you do this season.
